Cultural Etiquette Tips

  • Respect sacred sites: Heiau (temples) and other cultural sites should be treated with reverence. Don't climb on structures or remove anything.
  • Ask before entering: Some beaches and areas are on private Hawaiian homestead land. Look for signs and be respectful.
  • Learn basic Hawaiian: Locals appreciate visitors who try. "Mahalo" (thank you), "Aloha" (hello/love), "E komo mai" (welcome).
  • Remove shoes: It's customary to remove shoes before entering homes. Look for shoes at the door.
  • Support local: Buy from local artisans and farmers. It means a lot to the community.
