Hilo Farmers Market: Your Complete Guide

Everything you need to know about visiting Hawaii's best farmers market. Fresh tropical fruits, local crafts, and authentic Hawaiian culture.

The Hilo Farmers Market is one of Hawaii's most beloved markets and a must-visit destination for anyone staying at Island Goodes. Located in downtown Hilo, just 5 minutes from our property, the market offers an authentic taste of Hawaiian culture, fresh tropical produce, and locally made crafts.

When to Visit

The market operates year-round, but the best days to visit are Wednesday and Saturday when over 200 vendors set up shop. On these days, expect a full selection of produce, prepared foods, crafts, and live entertainment.

  • Wednesday & Saturday: 6 AM - 4 PM (full market, 200+ vendors)
  • Other days: 7 AM - 3 PM (smaller market, 30-40 vendors)

Pro tip: Arrive early (before 8 AM) on Wednesdays and Saturdays for the best selection and smaller crowds. Bring cash—many vendors don't accept cards.

What to Buy

Fresh Produce

The market is famous for its incredible selection of tropical fruits, many of which you've never seen in a mainland grocery store:

  • Lilikoi (passion fruit): Sweet-tart and perfect for juice
  • Dragon fruit: Striking pink exterior with speckled flesh
  • Rambutan: Hairy red fruit with sweet, lychee-like flesh
  • Apple bananas: Smaller and sweeter than regular bananas
  • Avocados: Local varieties much larger than Hass
  • Mangoes: When in season (May-October), incredibly sweet

Local Specialties

  • Macadamia nuts: Freshly roasted, many flavors available
  • Local honey: Including rare white honey from Kiawe flowers
  • Kona coffee: Fresh from Big Island farms
  • Hawaiian sea salt: Red and black varieties

Prepared Foods

The market is a fantastic place for breakfast or lunch. Look for:

  • Fresh coconut (vendors will cut one open for you)
  • Smoothie bowls and fresh fruit cups
  • Malasadas (Portuguese donuts)
  • Loco moco and plate lunches
  • Fresh poke (raw fish salad)

Crafts & Gifts

Support local artisans by shopping for handmade items:

  • Kukui nut and shell jewelry
  • Hawaiian quilts and textiles
  • Wood carvings and bowls
  • Natural soaps and body products
  • Original artwork and photography
