Hawaii Volcanoes National Park is one of the most extraordinary places on Earth. Home to two active volcanoes—Kilauea and Mauna Loa—the park offers visitors a chance to witness the raw power of volcanic activity and walk through landscapes found nowhere else on the planet.
Getting There from Island Goodes
The park is an easy 45-minute drive from Island Goodes. Head south on Highway 11 through Hilo, passing through the towns of Keaau and Mountain View. The main park entrance is well-marked on your right.
Pro tip: Leave early in the morning to beat the crowds and catch the best light for photography. The park is least crowded on weekday mornings.
Must-See Attractions
Kilauea Crater
The heart of the park is the Kilauea Caldera, a massive volcanic crater that's been continuously active for centuries. The views from the Jaggar Museum overlook (currently being rebuilt) and the Crater Rim Trail are spectacular. On clear nights, you may see the glow of lava reflected in the steam rising from the crater.
Thurston Lava Tube (Nahuku)
Walk through a 500-year-old lava tube surrounded by lush rainforest. This 15-minute walk is one of the park's most popular attractions. The tube is lit, but bring a flashlight to explore the darker extended section.
Chain of Craters Road
This 19-mile scenic drive descends 3,700 feet from the crater rim to the coast, passing numerous craters and old lava flows. The road ends where a 2003 lava flow crossed it, providing a dramatic view of how new land is created.
Devastation Trail
A half-mile paved walk through a forest devastated by the 1959 Kilauea Iki eruption. The skeletal remains of ohia trees stand as a stark reminder of volcanic power, though new growth shows nature's resilience.
Best Hikes in the Park
- Kilauea Iki Trail (4 miles): Descend into a crater and walk across its still-steaming floor. One of Hawaii's best hikes.
- Crater Rim Trail: Various sections offer different perspectives of the caldera.
- Pu'u Loa Petroglyphs (1.4 miles): See over 23,000 ancient Hawaiian rock carvings.
